Scotty G’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report

In my predictions, I said that the age old debate will be answered this weekend. The question that children and adults alike have debated since the dawn of time. That question is – which is cooler: dinosaurs or robots? Unfortunately, we don’t have an answer. We have a tie at the #1 spot. Final numbers will be released during the week, but the estimates say the question has not been answered.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opened with $42.5 million [I was off $19.5 million in my prediction] for an average of $10,368 per theatre. Since its opening on Wednesday, the film has taken in $67.5 million. Unfortunately, this does not bode will for the franchise because Ice Age: The Meltdown grossed $68 million on its opening weekend alone. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has yet to hit that number in five days of release. I will say that the Ice Age franchise has never opened in the summer time, and the level of competition is much higher at this time of year, but the film will be hard pressed to reach the levels of the previous two films.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen finished its second week with $42.5 million as well [I was off $1.6 million in my prediction]. The film was down 61% from its massive opening weekend, had an average of $10,038 per theatre, and its total gross is $294.3 million making it the highest grossing film of 2009. The 61% drop has to be a little bothersome because the first Transformers only dropped 47.5% in its second weekend of release. Having said that, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen might make more in three weekends of release that the first film did in its entire run [the total gross of the first film is $319.2 million].

Public Enemies opened in the #3 spot grossing $26.1 million [My prediction was off by $7.9 million]. Its per theatre average is $7,850 and its total gross since its Wednesday opening is $41 million. Reviews have been good but not great, but its got to be considered a decent opening. No other film in the marketplace appeals to adults like this one, and it will have some bleed over to younger audience because of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. As I always say, the marketing brings people out on the opening weekend. We’ll see how Public Enemies does going forward with the word of mouth.

The Proposal finished in the 4th spot grossing $12.7 million [I predicted it would be the #5 film, and I was off $2.2 million in my prediction]. Its total gross stands at $94.2 million, and the film will break the $100 million barrier by next weekend. Its per theatre average was $4,124.

The year’s highest grossing comedy rounds out the top five. The Hangover grossed $10.4 million [I predicted it would finish #4 and I was off $0.6 million in my prediction]. Its per theatre average was $3,393, and it broke the $200 million barrier this weekend with its total gross standing at $204.1 million. That makes it the 4th film of 2009 to gross over $200 million. Congratulations to Warner Bros., on the success of this film.

So to recap, here were my predictions:
