Scotty G’s Box Office Wrap-Up

Not a bad weekend of predictions for me. I correctly guessed all top 5 films [unfortunately I was not correct in what films would place in 4th and 5th spots], and I was within 12 million of my Wolverine prediction.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine had a great opening to start off the summer season. With the ultra-wide launch of being presented in almost 4,100 theatres, Wolverine grossed $87 million [I predicted $75 million], and had a ridiculous per theatre average of $21,225. Everyone was looking forward to the summer movie season, and Hugh Jackman and company, made sure it started off with a bang. Despite mild reviews, people still flocked to the theatre to check out the beginnings of X-Men’s most popular character. To show how dominant the film was, the Top 10 films grossed $148 million combined. With Wolverine’s $87 million gross, it accounted for 58.7% of the top 10’s box office. We’ll see how well it holds next weekend with Star Trek opening.

It also had the second highest opening for an X-Men film, just beating X2’s opening $85.5 million, but if you count inflation, it’s really the 3rd best opening in the series.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past has to be considered a little bit of a disappointment, as it did not open as well as previous Matthew McConaughey films. It landed at #2 with a gross of $15.3 million [almost 7 million less than my prediction]. It’s per theatre average was less than $5,000, so that is not a good sign that film will have legs. It was designed to be released as counter-programming to Wolverine, but it did not do as well as expected. It should fade fast.

Obsessed dropped from the top spot to #3. It grossed $12.2 million [.7 million less than what I predicted]. Sony’s go to be happy as the budget for the film was only $20 million, and it’s almost grossed $50 million.

17 Again fell from the #2 spot to the #4 spot. It ended up grossing $6.1 million [I predicted it would gross $4.6 million and finish at the #5 spot]. It dropped 47% from last weekend, and the Zac Efron film has also turned into a nice performer this spring at the box office. Expect it to fade now that the summer movie season has started.

Making its way back into the top 5 is Monsters vs. Aliens. It was #6 last week, and now it rounds out the top 5 with a gross of $5.8 million [I predicted $5.1 million]. It’s gross $182 millions, so the question to be asked is if it will have legs to make $200 million. It has another month to go until Disney/Pixar’s Up opens, so we’ll see.

Once again here were my predictions:

1) X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $75 million
2) Ghost of Girlfriends Past – $22 million
3) Obsessed – $12.9 million
4) Monsters vs. Aliens – $5.1 million
5) 17 Again – $4.6 million

And here were the actual numbers:

1) X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $87 million
2) Ghost of Girlfriends Past – $15.3 million
3) Obsessed – $12.2 million
4) 17 Again – $6.1 million
5) Monsters vs. Aliens – $5.8 million

Next week brings us Star Trek, so we’ll see if it has a bigger opening than X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
