Scotty G’s Weekend Box Office Picks – Weekend of March 13th, 2009

Well, we have another Friday the 13th upon us, but don’t expect a horror movie to be the number 1 film in the land. The big film this weekend is Race to Witch Mountain. Dwayne Johnson stars in this remake, and it should be the #1 film in the land. The biggest opening Johnson has ever had when he;s headlined a film remains The Scorpion King with $36 million, but his last family friendly film The Game Plan opened with around $22 million. Johnson does not have much competition as the other kids flick – The Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience – was died a quick death at the box office. Expect Race To Witch Mountain to open with $30 million dollars, making this the 2nd biggest opening for Johnson when he is the main star.

Last House on the Left is another remake being put in theatres this weekend. Based on the Wes Craven flick from the seventies, this film will benefit from opening on the 13th, but I have a gut feeling that this film could have done better if it had opened earlier in the year. Other horror films have launched with bigger openings this year, but it’s late to the game. I will say that I do like the commercials and trailers for the film, but will that be enough. I think Last House On The Left will open with $18 million.

Miss March is also released this weekend, but it will not make a dent in the top 5. It’s not getting a big release, and will probably perform much like Fired Up did earlier this year. It will do better on DVD.

Watchmen has been the top movie throughout the week, but it’s a film that doesn’t seem to have a lot of love from the general public. There’s no way that Watchmen holds as well in its second week, as Snyder’s previous film – 300 – did [It dropped only 53.6% from it’s opening weekend]. I’m going to predict a 65% drop, and it will gross around $19 million.

Taken and Slumdog Millionaire have been battling over the number 2 and 3 spots throughout the week, and they’ll be battling for the number 4 and 5 spots this weekend.

So – here are my predictions:

1) Race To Witch Mountain – $30 million
2) Watchmen – $19 million
3) Last House On The Left – $18 million
4) Taken – $5 million
5) Slumdog Millionaire – $4 million

We’ll see how I do on Sunday
