Saturday at the Movies: Glenn Walker on Django Unchained

django1We’ve already taken one look at Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained here at Biff Bam Pop!, a few weeks ago by Emily McGuiness, but the flick is still doing well in the theaters, it’s garnered a few Oscar nominations, and folks are still talking about it, so it’s still relevant – why not let that hack Glenn Walker review it? The dirty deed is after the jump.

Wreck-It Ralph vs Flight vs The Man With The Iron Fists – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

As our friends in the U.S. continue to recover from the superstorm that ravaged the Northeast, many will be looking for some respite from their hardships at the movies. I would anticipate, however, cinemas will be quieter than expected, for obvious reasons. Let’s see what films be released.

Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph will certainly be the pick for kids and families this weekend. The video-game themed film from Disney tells the story of the villainous title character who decides to repent and become a hero. It’s a clever idea and could be just what people are looking for this weekend – something light and fun, from the always reliable Disney. Look for a first place showing for Wreck-It Ralph, with $37 million.

Tony Scott R.I.P.

Tony Scott from the Unstoppable premiere in 2010.

Yesterday we lost one of the greats in film, undeniably one of the giants in the action film genre, director Tony Scott. The British born younger brother of director Ridley Scott, Tony Scott was 68, and jumped to his death from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles. A suicide note was left, and sources say that Scott had been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. His frenetic quick cut directing style has been credited with making the action film what it is today.

Scott broke through in 1983 with the erotic vampire flick, The Hunger, taking his cues from the literature of Anne Rice to create a new type of vampire. Rice wouldn’t make it to the screen for decades, so Scott brought her style to the screen with this. In a day when vampires are a dime a dozen, he reinvigorated the concept with the erotica that was inherent in the genre’s source material. Much of our current vamp ideas owe a debt to this film’s realization.
