Heart and Brains: Andy Burns On ParaNorman

This weekend I caught up on one of the better zombie films to come along this year. I was hugely surprised at how much I enjoyed this tale of persecuted witches, sadistic townspeople and a strange boy with a supernatural ability.

With all that, it’s no wonder than ParaNorman was PG. Check out the trailer below and then hit the jump for my review.

The Possession Takes Possession Of The Top Spot – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

It was one of the slowest box office weekends of the year, which meant small returns for the new releases. Here’s how the weekend turned out.

The Possession scared up enough money to become the number one film at the box office this weekend, debuting with $17 million. While not an amazing number, the film did manage to make back its $14 million budget opening weekend, which is a definite accomplishment. It may no be big money bragging rights, but its still bragging rights.

The Possession vs Lawless vs…Ooogieloves? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

The last weekend of the summer typically doesn’t have much to show in the way of box office, so expect the new releases to not do much business. Regardless, here’s what you can check out in theatres.

The Possession is yet another supernatural demon/ghost possession style flick, though one with an admittedly strong cast, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgewick. Last week’s horror entry, The Apparition, did absolutely nothing in terms of dollars, so The Possession could find itself an audience this last week of summer. Look for a first place showing with $13 million.

New Releases Bomb, The Expendables Stay Strong – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

New releases, we hardly knew ye. At least this week’s new releases at the box office, none of which managed to even make the top five. Here’s how the weekend turned out.

The Expendables 2 managed to hold onto the top spot at the box office for a second weekend in a row, bringing in $13.5 million to raises its total to $50 million. It still has a way to go to make it past $100 million, which I’m doubtful the film will be able to do.

Hit and Run vs Premium Rush vs The Apparition – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Movies August 24And so we enter the dregs of the summer blockbuster season, where few (if any) notable releases hit theaters, and the ones that are remaining are picking up scraps of audiences tuckered out my invading aliens, dark knights and expendable action stars. Will any new release make an impact this weekend? Not likely, but here’s a few that will try.

Hit & Run is an action comedy chase flick starring Dax Sheppard, Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper and Tom Arnold, all of whom (with the exception of Cooper, who is in a supporting role) can’t open a film. Bell is getting there, but she’s really a draw for romantic comedies. Look for this one to open outside then top five with $5 million.

The Expendables 2 Takes The Top – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

Underwhelming. That’s the only word to describe the weekend box office results. Four new films, none of which made a significant impact on audiences. Here’s what went down.

The action extravaganza The Expendables 2 debut in first place as predicted, but could only muster up $28 million, less than the original’s $34 million debut. That’s never a good sign for a franchise – studios always want to see the numbers go up for a new instalment. A little food for thought – though the picture added Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris to the action ensemble, name the last time they had a new release in theatres. I’ll wait.

Can’t do? Neither can. Suffice to say, their presence did nothing to increase interest in The Expendables 2. It’s not out of the question the film could cross the $100 million, but it will certainly have a tougher road ahead of it.

The Expendables 2 vs The Odd Life Of Timothy Green Vs ParaNorman vs Sparkle – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

This weekend a trio of new films are looking to unseat The Bourne Legacy from the top of the box office. But can a pumped up action sequel, a double dose of kids flicks or a diva’s swan song take down the reigning champ? Here are our predictions:

First up is The Expendables 2, starring a who’s who of action icons, including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. With this much (faded) starpower and fond memories of the 2010 original, there’s no question that The Expendables 2 will be the film to beat this weekend. Look for it to blow away the competition with a first place debut with $43 million.

Saturday at the Movies: ParaNorman

paranormanParaNorman is the latest gem from Lalka Entertainment, best known for Corpse Bride and Coraline. Using many of the same stunning stop-motion filming techniques, Chris Butler makes his directorial debut with this endearing film about a misunderstood kid and his supernatural abilities.

I recently saw ParaNorman in 3-D and can pretty much guarantee you’ll love this flick, regardless of age; if not for the characters then for the AMAZING eyeball feast of animation.

Check out the trailer below and a wicked “making of” featurette after the jump!
