Argo Claims The Top, New Releases Flounder – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report
This weekend, audiences had more to concern themselves with than the movies. As it turns out, the huge storm warnings in the U.S.A. definitely had an effect on the box office, as virtually every film underperformed this weekend. Here’s what went down.
Argo grabbed the top spot this weekend with $12.5 million. While not a hugely impressive number, especially for a number one film, this is proof that not the film has connected with audiences. Look for it to continue its decent run in theatres over the next weeks, and don’t be surprised to see it get a second wind come Oscar nomination time.

Cloud Atlas vs Silent Hill – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions
The last weekend in October sees yet another horror film hit theatres, just in time for the Halloween crowd. In the meantime, another potential epic from the Wachowski Starship (formerly Brothers) makes its way onto screens. Will either top the box office? Here are our predictions.
Cloud Atlas is the sci-fi adaptation from the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, and starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving. The book was a bestseller and the film, with its multiple timeshifting storylines is highly anticipated. However, the Wachowski’s havent had a hit in years (Speed Racer sank like a brightly coloured stone), and I doubt Cloud Atlas will reverse that trend. Reviews are mixed (though Roger Ebert was absolutely enamoured with it), and the 161 minute run time is going to limit showings. Look for Cloud Atlas to debut in third place with $14 million.

Paranormal Activity Claims Number One, Alex Cross Flops – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report
Another October, another Paranormal Activity film in theatres. While the fourth instalment managed to grab the number one spot, it’s clear that the franchise is wearing thin on audiences. Meanwhile, a dramatic turn from Tyler Perry fell flat. Here’s how the weekend went down.
It’s no surprise that Paranormal Activity 4 claimed the top spot at the box office with $30 million. Normally, you’d consider that a great showing, and the film has already made back its $5 million budget so it’s all profit from here. However, this number is a far cry from last year’s third release, which opened with $52 million. So yes, there’s still money to be made, and we’ll likely see a fifth film next year, but the studio should start preparing a new Halloween horror franchise.

Saturday at the Movies: Paranormal Activity 4
Paranormal Activity 4 was released this weekend just in time for the Halloween horror cash grab, and although it was exciting to be part of the ‘fan voted’ advance screening in Toronto, the movie doesn’t really make my cut. In the same spirit as the Oren Peli created Paranormal Activity, this movie relies on a variety of filmed footage to reveal the plight of a family being haunted by evil spirits.
If you’re a fan of the first 3 movies, this continues the story of Katie, Hunter and the bizarre coven. Minimal spoilers – the movie doesn’t rely very heavily on the original storyline.
I didn’t find this to be a scary or compelling horror movie, but Paranormal Activity 4 does have its moments for those seeking a fun “jump out of your seat” date night. Check out the trailer and more after the jump.
Paranormal Activity 4 vs Alex Cross – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Predictions
There should be a lot of activity at the box office this weekend, as the fourth instalment in a horror franchise is unleashed upon a suspecting public. Meanwhile, a box office draw makes his debut as a popular detective. Here’s how the weekend could turn out:
As advertised, Paranormal Activity 4 is the latest in the series that continues to scare up huge business every fall at the box office. But every horror franchise has to fall at some point, and with middling reviews I’m guessing that PA4 is going to begin the law of of diminishing returns. Eventually. However, this weekend the franchise is bulletproof and should have a healthy gross. Look for a first place finishing with $45 million.

Trailer Time: Paranormal Activity 4
The Paranormal Activity franchise rolls on this October with the release of Paranormal Activity 4, which looks as though it’s aiming to try to tie everything together. This new trailer definitely has some creepiness to it, but I have to say I’m nowhere near sold on this new girl who seems to be the focus of the film. That being said, I’ll still be there opening night to hopefully have the crap scared out of me. Check out the trailer below and let us know if you’ll be seeing Paranormal Activity 4!
