Everybody at Biff Bam Pop! is talking about Top Fives, so I guess it’s my turn. Put on your seat belts, because as the regular readers around here know already, my tastes are not normal. I liked Santa Claus and hated Dark Knight. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. Next, after the jump, my top fives in film, music, television, and comic books. Look out.
The Hunger Games Catches Fire For Stellar Debut – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend of March 23rd, 2012
Wow. That pretty much sums up the opening weekend for The Hunger Games. Take hype, add in stellar reviews and polish it off with great source material and you’ve got a huge gross that left every other film in the dust. Here’s how the weekend turned out:
The Hunger Games Will Swallow The Competition – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of March 23rd, 2012
Let’s be real – we all know that The Hunger Games is going to rule the box office this weekend. And by rule, I mean utterly decimate the competition. The only real question is, how much money will the film bring in over the weekend? Are we talking Twilight numbers? Summer blockbuster dough? Or will the return be less than expected. Here are our predictions:
21 Jump Street Conquers The Box Office, John Carter Still Can’t Get Arrested – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend of March 16th, 2012
One new release hit theatres this weekend and it managed to not only top the box office, but exceed expectations when it came to its gross. Here’s how things turned out:
Chalk it up to 80′s notalgia or the star power of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill or the rave reviews; whatever the reasons, 21 Jump Street had a fantastic opening weekend, debuting at number one with a stellar $35 million gross, ten million more than predicted. The film had everything going in its favour this weekend, and it all added up to a great performance. The question now is, what will happen over the next few weekends.
As for the rest of the top five, it was all holdovers. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax fell to second after two weeks on top, with a still strong $22.8 million, for a total gross of $158 million in North America. John Carter fell one spot to third with an abysmal $13 million. It’s current total in North America is only $55 million. While it’s worldwide total is up to $179 million, keep in mind that this Disney film cost $250 to make, and that doesn’t include promotion. So really, any way you look at it, John Carter has been a financial flop.
In at number four is Project X with $4 million while A Thousand Words actually moves up a spot from last week to close out the top five with $3.7 million, $0.1 million ahead of Act of Valor.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax – $30 million
2) 21 Jump Street – $25 million
3) John Carter – $20 million
4) Projext X – $6 million
5) Act of Valor – $4 million
And here’s how the weekend turned out:
1) 21 Jump Street – $35 million
2) Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax– $22.8 million
3) John Carter – $13 million
4) Projext X – $4 million
5) A Thousand Words – $3.7 million

Will Audiences Run To See 21 Jump Street? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of March 16th, 2012
It’s going to be an interesting weekend at the box office – not because we’re getting a whole bunch of new releases. Instead, there’s only one biggie that hits theatres. Will it knock The Lorax from the top spot? And where will John Carter wind up in its second weekend out? Here are our prediction:
Opening this weekend is 21 Jump Street, the remake of the sort-of classic teen cop show that first aired on FOX in the late 80′s and introduced the world to Johnny Depp (and Richard Greico, it must be noted). While the original was a drama, this big screen incarnation of 21 Jump Street is being played for laughs, staring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Trailers have been entertaining and both Hill and Tatum are coming off solid scores at the box office with Moneyball and The Vow, respectively. Meanwhile, so far reviews have been strong for the film. However, like The A-Team and Dukes of Hazard before it, I’m not sure if nostalgia is going to turn into big dollar signs for this 80′s retread. With all of these factors, look for 21 Jump Street to open in second place with $25 million.
John Carter Bombs Big Time While The Lorax Stays Strong – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend of March 9th, 2012
Anybody around the world with the name John Carter is currently cursing the new release from Disney, as its arrival in theatres this week came with a gigantic thud. What may turn out to be one of the biggest bombs of 2012 could only muster second place, while last week’s number one managed to stay strong. Here’s how the weekend turned out:
It was a strong showing for Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax in it’s second weekend in theatres. The film grossed $39 million, down only 44% from its opening number. The Lorax has already made $121 million, and I’m guessing we’re going to see it cross the $200 million mark before it leaves theatres.
Can John Carter, Silent House or A Thousand Words Unseat The Lorax? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of March 10th, 2012
Three high profile new releases are looking to unseat The Lorax from the top of the box office this weekend, but will any of them be able to take the throne? Here are our predictions:
John Carter, known to sci-fi fans around the world better as John Carter of Mars, is an adaptation of the much-beloved series from Edgar Rice Burroughs. The film has been in development for decades, but it’s Disney, director Andrew Stanton and Taylor Kitsch in the lead role who have finally managed to bring the epic to the big screen. Unfortunately, all signs are pointing to a bomb of epic proportion. First of all, the budget is $250 million, which is insane for a sci-fi film based on a character that’s far from a household name, staring an actor that isn’t close to being a megastar (and I liked Kitsch as Gambit in Wolverine). Secondly, reviews have been far from kind to the film, so negative in fact that it could turn potential audiences off. I’m guessing John Carter is going to have to rely on overseas audiences to come close to making a profit. Look for a soft debut in second place with a $25.5 million gross.
