Hotel Transylvania and Looper Shine – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

Our predictions may have been off, but the weekend box office numbers are well worth celebrating, as the two big releases absolutely over-performed, bringing crowds back to theatres after a few humdrum weeks. Here’s what went down.

Classic monsters turned out to be a huge draw for families this weekend, as Hotel Transylvania scared up a stellar $42 million to land in first place. This is a great number, the best turn-out for a film with Adam Sandler in quite some time. Clearly the film appealed to a cross-demo and should have some decent legs over the next few weeks.

Check In To Hotel Transylvania or Spend Time With Looper? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Two big movies are vying for your box office bucks this weekend – one is a highly anticipated sci-fi action flick that’s had lots of people talking thanks to its star power and interesting premise. The other is Hotel Transylvania. Which one will wind up on top of the box office? Here are our predictions:

Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a time-travelling assassin who is sent forward in time to kill himself, as grown up to look like Bruce Willis. The trailers have been intense and the buzz on the film is high. Even though JGL didn’t make any waves with his recent Premium Rush, that film has minimal marketing. This one is really going to be the test to see if the actor’s stock has risen at all since The Dark Knight Rises. You also can’t discount the appeal of Bruce Willis in the film; though he hasn’t been making $100 million dollar hits as of late, he still has a fan base that will see him in the right film. Look for Looper to travel to the top of the box office this weekend with $23 million.

How will the rest of the top five turn out? Find out after the jump!

Saturday at the Movies: Billy Madison and 10 Reasons to Go Back to School

Billy MadisonBack to school, back to school… it’s that time of year again; and to celebrate, this instalment of Saturday at the Movies is dedicated to one of my favourite ‘Back to School’ movies: Billy Madison.

If you’re not familiar with this movie, well.. what’s WRONG with you? I think there is actually a generational gap when it comes to Adam Sandler movies… because starting in about 2000 his films just started to suck; and not in the charming way his fans were used to. Billy Madison is probably his best typecast role and besides having some of the most memorable one-liners of all Sandler’s movies, it ALSO offers some great reasons to get excited about  heading back to class.

And so, in today’s Saturday at the Movies…

Billy Madison’s Top 10 Reasons to Go Back to School

Tom Cruise and Rock Of Ages Battles Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of June 15th, 2012

An R-rated comedy from two Saturday Night Live alum and a rock and roll musical that will take you back to 1987 are the big films opening this weekend. Will either of them manage to knock Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted from the top of the box office? Here are our predictions:

Saturday at the Movies: That’s My Boy

That's My Boy MovieAdam Sandler movies can be hit and/or miss. Hit: Billy Madison. Miss: Little Nicky. But even the misses have their moments. That’s My Boy, the latest from Happy Madison studios, has just enough funny moments to makes up for the missing ‘je ne sais quoi’ that will keep this from being a hit comedy.

Then again, am I being too analytical here? That’s My Boy, which co-stars Andy Samberg as the ‘straight man’, follows any basic Adam Sandler movie formula: insane premise + old ladies in sexual context = leads to wacky endings.

This comedy also comes with lots of bonus SNL cast member appearances, and a few genuine laugh out loud moments that serve to remind me why I love Adam Sandler sometimes. Check out the trailer, and my quick review (with minimal spoilers) after the jump!

Immortals Reigns Supreme – Box Office Wrap-Up Report For Weekend of November 11th

As predicted, Immortals took the top of the box office, while Adam Sandler’s cross-dressing extravaganza Jack and Jill exceeded my expectations. In the meantime, Tower Heist dropped and J. Edgar didn’t even really make it out of the gates. Here’s how the weekend turned out:

Adam Sandler in drag vs J. Edgar…in drag – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions for November 11th, 2011

Some people love Adam Sandler, others not so much. You can count me firmly in that camp. So I ask you, what could be worse than an Adam Sandler film? The answer, my friend, is simple:

Adam Sandler in drag.

That’s what we’re getting this weekend, along with Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar and Mickey Rourke as an Immortal. Here’s how I see the weekend playing out.
