Hitch, Ross and America’s Got Powers and An Absolute No Show Top The Wednesday Run – April 11, 2012
Editor’s Update: Turns out, the information about the release of one of this week’s featured title, gleaned from DC Comics’ own website is incorrect. Absolute Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Wars is now scheduled to be released in October, at least according to Amazon.ca. You can order it here and read about why you should after the jump.
But before that, as far as a single issue you should be picking up today, hands down it’s America’s Got Powers by Jonathan Ross and Bryan Hitch. Just when you think you’ve seen everything a superhero comic could do, these two creators come up with an absolutely brilliant concept (superpowered people competing on television for a spot on a team) and a stellar delivery. Ross’ dialogue makes you feel like you’re part of the tv show, while Hitch’s art is widescreen gorgeous. He makes use of double page spreads frequently, so I do recommend actually getting this issue in physical form rather than digital. For $2.99 and at 38 pages, it’s well worth it. America’s Got Power is currently scheduled to run as a mini-series, but I’m pretty sure we’re all going to wind up wanting more from these two. - Andy Burns

In the comic book industry, the big, company-wide, every-character-you-can-think-of-going-up-against-the-biggest-baddest-villian-imaginable-with-the-most-ultimate-of-stakes-on-the-line series is generally reserved for the summertime. It’s like sequential storytelling’s version of a popcorn-coma Michael Bay film.
Well, here in southern Ontario (and, actually, much of North America), we’ve had some exceptionally warm weather for the month of March. Maybe it’s that reason, then, that both Marvel Comics and DC Comics are getting their major story arcs in gear a little early this year.
And it’s causing a bit of a dilemma this Wednesday in terms of deciding what one comic a reader should pick up.
How can you decide between these three fascinating comics out today?

Monsters, Aliens & Conspiracy Theories Debunked! It’s No Hoax That Today, You Must Make The Wednesday Run – March 21, 2012
Although some might consider me a relative newcomer to the niche, I’m a big fan of late-night conspiracy radio programs. I’ve been avidly listening to them on a regular basis for nearly fifteen years now. In fact, I’m listening to Coast to Coast as I write this piece. You see, a number of years ago, I was undergoing a bout of insomnia and nothing could fix the problem: not music, not fresh air, not evening exercise and not late-night snacking. The only thing that really came close to helping me get the shut-eye I needed was watching Oliver Stone’s JFK in the wee hours of the morning. Which was, looking back, a bit of a tip-off.
I’m also a fan of television shows like Ancient Aliens, Brad Meltzer’s Decoded and Mythbusters. Really, it was only a matter of time before some astute writer/artist tandem would merge the conspiracy story-telling industry into a fully-fledged comic book storyline.
Well, that time is now. And that comic book is Hoax Hunters.

The Night Is A Force To Be Reckoned With On The Wednesday Run – March 7, 2012
We’ve been here before, haven’t we?
You remember.
The night. An evil force needing banishment. A summoning of heroes. And, in the spirit of my favourite television show these days (Game of Thrones, ‘natch), winter is coming.
Uh, Baron Winters, that is.
Last October, in this very column, I recommended the hardcover compilation of the early 1980’s mystery/suspense/horror series Night Force. Created, written and illustrated by industry legends Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, Night Force revolved around supernatural agent Baron Winters and his team of mystics fighting all manner of otherworldly unpleasantness. Thank your lucky hoodoo because today – they’re back!
