My Favourite Horror Film: JW Ward on The Exorcist
It’s been a wild month here at Biff Bam Pop!, slowly working our way towards the greatest and most fun of all the dates on the calendar: Hallowe’en.
We’ve explored the dark realms of H.P. Lovecraft and the twisted recesses of Stephen King’s imagination. We’ve celebrated the greatest villains and now, each of BBP‘s contributors are picking their favourite horror films of all time.
My choice might be predictable. It’s one of the few instances where I’ll side with the masses, but it’s for a reason:
It’s that damn good.
Year after year, this film is at the top of every list of scariest horror films of all time.
If you’ve seen it, you know why.
If not, it’s time to find out what you’ve been missing.
My Favourite Horror Film – It’s Dark Down Here: David Ward on The Descent
As a caveat, I have been watching horror films for almost as long as I can remember. I love monsters; I love the dark; I love to get creeped out by things I cannot fathom. My favourites are legion: Hellraiser, The Omen, The Shining, Shaun of the Dead, Alien, Psycho, Horror of Dracula, The Thing… So I decided to limit it to horror films I’ve seen in the past few years that scared the living shit out of me. Two sprang to mind: 1408 (the only horror film to date that made me cry) and the scariest film I’ve seen since I sat down to watch something burst out of John Hurt’s chest, The Descent.
My Favourite Horror Film: Andy Burns checks into The Overlook Hotel for another look at The Shining
During the summer you may have read the Nine Weeks of Kubrick series I put together after purchasing the then new Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Blu-Ray box set (if not, you can find it here). Among the films discussed just happened to be what really amounts to my all-time favourite horror film. Why, you may ask? Well, when you think about, there’s just so much to love and dread about The Shining.
My Favourite Horror Film: Ian Rogers on how two particular musical notes keep him out of the water
I’ve been watching horror movies since I was… well, too young to be watching them. So coming up with my favourite is no easy feat. It’s like trying to decide which one of your kids you love the most. At best, I can tell you what my favourite horror movie is right now. Actually, it makes my top spot most days.
Warning! Some May Find The Following Films Disturbing−Our Favourite Horror Films Week Begins Now!
Flashback: I’m ten years old and I’m excitedly hustling over to my friend’s house with some of the other neighbourhood kids after lunch on a summer day. We head straight downstairs into the cool basement, closing the door behind us. Extra pillows are stuffed firmly into window frames to blot out any afternoon sunlight. The lamps and ceilings lights are shut off and and we pop the latest (rented) horror film into the VCR, our wide eyes illuminated only by a gray-blue haze emanating from the sixteen inch tube television screen in front of us. A static image reads “Rated R”.
Awesome!
