Marvel Is Avenged Thrice – AvX, The Kree Skrull War and Fury Highlight The Wednesday Run – May 2, 2012

Last fall, the weekly Wednesday run to the local comic book shop was hurriedly made on account of one specific publishing company: DC Comics. With their New 52 launch, great, irresistible titles were out every week! Who could say “no” to that many cool first issues?

This week turns the tables with Marvel Comics leading the way, the entertainment company releasing a whole host of goodies.

It’s Avengers week, after all, didn’t you know?

Make the run to your comic book shop. You’re going to find something you’ll like. Here’s a quick sampling in case you need a few specific suggestions I’ve “avengingly assembled” for you:

Spring Black Orchid Picking On The Wednesday Run – April 25, 2012

Despite the recent chill across much of the northeast of this continent, spring is still upon us. There’s landscaping to be done in the backyard and those colourful impatiens are now showing through. Warmer weather, I’m sure, is just around the corner.

So is the local comic book shop.

And that’s where we should all find our green thumb today – as we hit up something exotic. Something, oh, I don’t know, in the form of the beautiful and delicate orchid?

A black orchid, to be precise.

Find Out What Evil Lurks In The Hearts Of Men On The Wednesday Run – April 18, 2012

Whether you know it or not, an injustice has been thrown upon us comic book fans for too long now. The legendary, red-scarved and black-cloaked vigilante with the hooked nose, steely gaze, and ominous laugh has been unceremoniously resigned to our misty-coloured memories and plaintive sighs – but no longer!

Today is an exciting day for us suffering, pulp-deprived fans!

Lamont Cranston, the Shadow, returns in a new ongoing, monthly series from Dynamite Entertainment. Criminals will cower and the gunfire of retribution will ring out loud in the streets of 1930’s New York…for the Shadow knows – say it with me now – what evil lurks in the hearts of men!

Aren’t we lucky? You bet we are!

Hitch, Ross and America’s Got Powers and An Absolute No Show Top The Wednesday Run – April 11, 2012

Editor’s Update: Turns out, the information about the release of one of this week’s featured title, gleaned from DC Comics’ own website is incorrect. Absolute Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Wars is now scheduled to be released in October, at least according to Amazon.ca. You can order it here and read about why you should after the jump.

But before that, as far as a single issue you should be picking up today, hands down it’s America’s Got Powers by Jonathan Ross and Bryan Hitch. Just when you think you’ve seen everything a superhero comic could do, these two creators come up with an absolutely brilliant concept (superpowered people competing on television for a spot on a team) and a stellar delivery. Ross’ dialogue makes you feel like you’re part of the tv show, while Hitch’s art is widescreen gorgeous. He makes use of double page spreads frequently, so I do recommend actually getting this issue in physical form rather than digital. For $2.99 and at 38 pages, it’s well worth it. America’s Got Power is currently scheduled to run as a mini-series, but I’m pretty sure we’re all going to wind up wanting more from these two. - Andy Burns

The Comic Stop Exclusive Interview: Michael Moreci, Steve Seeley and JM Ringuet on Story, Art, Cryptoids And A Comic Book Called Hoax Hunters

A few weeks ago, the Hoax Hunters introductory issue #0, published by Image Comics, made the Biff Bam Pop! Wednesday Run as the hot comic to pick up. You can read that particular column here. Inspired by conspiracy television shows such as Ancient Aliens, Brad Meltzer’s Decoded and Destination Truth, Hoax Hunters turns the genre on its head as the comic book’s protagonists attempt to disprove life’s oddities in front of the camera –while covering up dark mysteries behind it. Writers Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley and artist JM Ringuet were kind enough to talk to Andy Burns and JP Fallavollita via email about the series, the creative process, monsters, cryptoids, television and much, much more.
