The Comic Stop: Andy Burns on Morning Glories #13 and Ghostbusters #2
This week at The Comic Stop, I’ve got two titles for you. One is based on a popular film franchise, the other should become one at some point in the near future. Read on:
H.P. Lovecraft Week: Ian Rogers on The Real Ghostbusters — The Collect Call of Cathulhu
My first exposure to H.P. Lovecraft didn’t come from his stories, but rather a cartoon that aired back in the 1980s called The Real Ghostbusters. This was, of course, an animated series based on the popular film about a band of ghost-hunters-for-hire operating out of an old firehall in New York City.

Ramis on Ghostbusters 3:
The Chicago Tribune has posted an email from Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler) regarding all the hoopla around a potential Ghostbusters 3, which we talked about in The Buzz yesterday:
yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. not much else to say at this point. everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we’ll take it from there.
With Judd Apatow involved, we could be seeing Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, and McLovin’ as the next generation Ghostbusters. What do you think of that?

Spider-Man 4 and 5 going forward:
Though it made over $800 million at the box office, few would argue that Spider-Man 3 wasn’t hugely disappointing, especially coming on the heels of the vastly superior second film. Speculation was rampant that Sam Raimi’s role as film director was coming to an end, but word came out this Friday via Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily that both Raimi and star Tobey Maguire have signed on for both Spider-Man 4 AND 5, with aims to shoot them both concurrently from a script by Zodiac writer James Vanderbilt (and if you haven’t seen Zodiac, one of the best films of 2007 and ever, stop reading and go watch it right now). As for the films villain, expect to see Dylan Baker’s Doc Connors finally become the Lizard. While Sony hasn’t confirmed any of this officially, filming is tentatively set for Fall 2009 with an eye on a Summer 2011 release for Spider-Man 4, the same summer Marvel Studios plans on putting The Avengers into theatres.
Millar wants to write Superman reboot:
For months comic book writer Mark Millar (Ultimate Avengers, Civil War, Wanted) has been vocal about his love for Superman and how he wants to be the one to write the next Superman film. With word coming out last week that Warner Brothers was planning on rebooting the franchise, Millar’s dream might be that much closer to fruition. According to an interview with G4, Millar is in talks with a big name Hollywood director who wants to take on the reboot and have Millar write the script. Millar’s plan calls for a massive 3-picture Lord Of The Rings-esque tale. With the success of Wanted ($134 million in North America) suddenly there’s a better chance of WB wanting to hear Millar’s idea. No more details other than Millar would like to see the film start shooting this summer.
Ghostbusters 3 Rumours Heat Up:
For years there’s been all sorts of talk about a third Ghostbusters film, but the closest we’ve come is the upcoming Ghostbusters video, scripted by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd and featuring the voice talents of all the original players, including Bill Murray. Now comes words that Columbia has hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky from The Office to write the third film. The two are behind the Harold Ramis directed, Judd Apatow produced The Year One. Whether this comes to fruition or not is another story, and few expect to see Bill Murray back as Peter Venkmen.
