It’s the Thanksgiving long weekend in the U.S., which typically means big time bucks for movie theaters. This year should prove to be no exception. Will it be a new movie or a holdover from last week that will reign at the top of the box office? Here’s our predictions:
New this weekend is The Good Dinosaur, from Disney and Pixar. With credentials like that, you know that this is going to be the choice for families celebrating the holiday weekend, even if reviews have been calling the film good but not great. Look for a first place showing for The Good Dinosaur with $60 million.
Also opening this weekend is Creed, a spin-off from the Rocky franchise that finds Michael B. Jordan taking on the role of Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis, with Sylvester Stallone’s legendary character acting as trainer. Co-written and directed by Ryan Coogler, whose first film was the acclaimed Fruitville Station, Creed has been getting simply outstanding reviews, which should definitely bode well for the film’s success. Look for a third place debut with $26 million.
The final new debut this weekend is Victor Frankenstein, starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, but this comedic story based on the Mary Shelley classic has been getting scewered by reviewers and will likely not find an audience this weekend. It will debut outside the top five.
As for the rest of the top five, The Hunger Games: Mockingbird Part 2 will be in second place with $48 million. Spectre will grab fourth place with $10 million, while The Peanuts Movie will close things out in fifth place with $9.5 million.
