Out Of Jurassic It’s Turok: Dinosaur Hunter On The Wednesday Run–February 5, 2014

While playing a little BSG with a group of gaming friends last week, I was reminded by our friend Brad about the exciting debut of the comic that makes up this week’s Wednesday Run column.

Now, Brad may be an untrustworthy sort during our rousing gaming sessions (he was a hidden Cylon toaster last week and deftly saw to the annihilation of the human race), but the man knows his comics. If he’s excited about something, well, damn it, we should all check out what’s caused that enthusiasm.

This week, the fervour we should all be feeling is due to the return of an old classic! It’s Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #1!

Turok is one of the Gold Key Comics characters, a publishing company that operated fro the early 1960’s through to the mid 1980’s. Dynamite Entertainment has recently licensed various Gold Key characters and is beginning to release them in comic book form. It’s got a lot of people excited – there are still many comic book readers out there who grew up on Turok, Solar, Magnus and Dr. Spektor! Dynamite is hoping this enthusiasm is passed down through the generations to sons and daughters and grandchildren of those original readers.

Turok first appeared within the pages of Four Color Comics in 1954 and went on to star in his own series, Turok: Son of Son. A Native American Indian hero, one of the interesting aspects of Turok was that it was a science fiction comic! The character bravely fought in the “lost valley”, a land hidden away from time, it seemed, against beastly dinosaurs.

Under fan-favourite writer Greg Pak and artist Mirko Colak, the Dynamite Entertainment version of Turok returns to that savage land. Shunned by his tribe, our hero attempts to survive by outwitting the man-eating thunder lizards that attack his people. But there are bigger questions here: why are there dinosaurs here? How have they survived through so many years? And can Turok save his beloved people – the ones that have taken everything away from him?

Count on Pak and Colak to add a twenty-first century mythology to a legendary character! Make the run to your local comic book shop today and pick up a story of high adventure! Pick up Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #1.

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
