Cloud Atlas vs Silent Hill – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

The last weekend in October sees yet another horror film hit theatres, just in time for the Halloween crowd. In the meantime, another potential epic from the Wachowski Starship (formerly Brothers) makes its way onto screens. Will either top the box office? Here are our predictions.

Cloud Atlas is the sci-fi adaptation from the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, and starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving. The book was a bestseller and the film, with its multiple timeshifting storylines is highly anticipated. However, the Wachowski’s havent had a hit in years (Speed Racer sank like a brightly coloured stone), and I doubt Cloud Atlas will reverse that trend. Reviews are mixed (though Roger Ebert was absolutely enamoured with it), and the 161 minute run time is going to limit showings. Look for Cloud Atlas to debut in third place with $14 million.

Also out this weekend is Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, a sequel to the 2006 film which actually did fairly well upon release, grossing $97 million worldwide on a $50 million. I don’t expect this instalment to do anywhere close to that number. The film has been on the shelf for a year now, and there’s been minimal advertising letting folks know it’s even coming to theatres. Look for a fifth place showing with $10 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Paranormal Activity 4 should hold onto the top spot for one more weekend with $17 million. Argo will grab second place with $15.5 million, while Hotel Transylvania will hit fourth with $11.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Paranormal Activity 4 – $17 million
2) Argo – $15.5 million
3) Cloud Atlas – $14 million
4) Hotel Transylvania – $11.5 million
5) Silent Hill: Revelation 3D

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
