Resident Evil: Retribution Rises To The Top – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

A definite surprise at the box office this weekend, with a venerable franchise managing to claim the top spot against an animated classic making its way back on to the screen. Here’s how the weekend went down.

Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth film from Milla Jovovich and producer/director Paul Anderson hit the number one spot this weekend with $21 million. While it’s not amazing money, the smallest opening weekend take for the franchise, and down from what we predicted, it still shows that there’s some life left in the series. While not guaranteed, a sixth film is already pretty likely.

Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump.

Coming in second place was Finding Nemo 3D, another Disney conversion. Surprisingly, though this is the most successful Pixar/Disney flick, the movie could only muster up $17 million this weekend. Not horrible, but a far cry from the $30+ I predicted. Still, whatever money this reissue brings in is just icing on the films huge take from its original release.

As for the rest of the top five, The Possession dropped to third with $5.4 million, Lawless hit fourth place with $4 million while ParaNorman closed things out in fifth with $3 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Finding Nemo 3D – $35 million
2) Resident Evil: Retribution – $24 million
3) The Possession – $4.5 million
4) Lawless – $4 million
5) The Expendables – $3 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1)  Resident Evil: Retribution – $21 million
2) Finding Nemo 3D – $17 million
3) The Possession – $5.8 million
4) Lawless – $4 million
5) ParaNorman– $3 million

Next week sees the release of Dredd, House At The End Of The Street, Trouble With The Curve and End Of Watch. Check back on Friday to see our predictions for those flicks!
