Finding Nemo 3D vs Resident Evil: Retribution – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Two big 3D flicks are looking to do battle at the box office this weekend. Both have solid numbers to back up their names, so this could be the biggest battle we’ve seen in theatres for some time. Here’s what’s going down.

Finding Nemo 3D is a conversion of the hugely popular Pixar/Disney flick that was first released back in 2003, becoming one of the biggest animated films of all time. I see no reason why this won’t draw families back to theatres to see the movie on the big screen. 3D prices will absolutely help Finding Nemo 3D make a pretty penny in its rerelease. Look for the film to debut in the top spot with $35 million.

There are more predictions after the jump!

Resident Evil: Retribution is the fifth film in the still strong zombie/video game film franchise. For this installment, director Paul Anderson and star Milla Jovovich are joined once again by Michelle Rodriguez, who was last seen in the first film some ten years ago. The last installment in the franchise was a huge hit in 2010, grossing nearly $300 million worldwide and opening in North America with $26 million. The question is whether or not going back to the well again is going to result in diminishing returns for the franchise. I feel as though there’s been less advertising for the film, so awareness may not be as high as one would hope. Regardless, the film should still bring in a decent number. Look for Resident Evil: Retribution to debut in second place with $24 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Possession’s run at the top will end, as the film should land in third place with $4.5 million. Lawless will wind up in fourth spot with $4 million while The Expendables 2 will close things out in fifth with $3 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Finding Nemo 3D – $35 million
2) Resident Evil: Retribution – $24 million
3) The Possession – $4.5 million
4) Lawless – $4 million
5) The Expendables – $3 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
