The Possession vs Lawless vs…Ooogieloves? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

The last weekend of the summer typically doesn’t have much to show in the way of box office, so expect the new releases to not do much business. Regardless, here’s what you can check out in theatres.

The Possession is yet another supernatural demon/ghost possession style flick, though one with an admittedly strong cast, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgewick. Last week’s horror entry, The Apparition, did absolutely nothing in terms of dollars, so The Possession could find itself an audience this last week of summer. Look for a first place showing with $13 million.

Find out what else is out there after the jump!

Lawless is a prohibition-era gangster flick starring Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy, both of whom have been getting decent notices for the film. However, gangster flicks are often a crapshoot with audiences, and I don’t see this one making much noise simply based on the timing of its release. I’m predicting a second place showing but with a lacklustre $10 million gross.

The final notable release (in theory) is the kids flick The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure. There are no Muppets in this one, nothing Pixar, Dreamworks or Disney related, so I’d put a fork in this supposed family fun flick. Parents will just have to look forward to Finding Nemo 3D in a few weeks. Look for this one to debut outside the top five.

Speaking of which, The Expendables 2 will hit the third spot with $8 million, the controversial 2016: Obama’s America to show up in fourth place with $7.5 million while ParaNorman will close things out in fifth with $7 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Possession – $13 million
2) Lawless – $10 million
3) The Expendables 2 – $8 million
4) 2016: Obama’s America – $7.5 million
5) ParaNorman – $7 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
