Trailer Time: Skyfall

After years of anticipation, the new James Bond flick Skyfall is almost upon it. Today brings a new, international trailer that I found absolutely riveting. I’m a fan of Daniel Craig as Bond, and I like his delivery in every scene we see here. Check out the Skyfall trailer and let us know if you happy that Bond is back (this October).

Josh Hutcherson Enters Detention

Do you like the 90s? No, I mean, do you really like the 90s? Because Detention, out on Blu-Ray™, DVD and Digital today from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, has a focus on the 90s that rivals this decade’s most intense Bieber fanatic. Every single possible reference from that decade has been lovingly, bewilderingly crammed into the script.

Detention is an apocalyptic fantasy, horror, science fiction, action-thriller, body swapping, teen romantic comedy with a time-traveling space-bear. If that doesn’t get you, then I don’t know what to do with you. Perhaps you should go over there and stand with the Wall-Mart greeters and envelope stuffers of the world. To enjoy this film, you MUST embrace the randomness. Find out why after the jump!

Tales From The Long Box – The Demon #1 (1987)

Every other week, Jason Shayer will highlight an issue or a run of issues pulled from the horde of comic book long boxes that occupy more room in his house than his wife can tolerate. Each of these reviews will delve into what made that issue or run significant as well as discuss the creative personalities behind the work. “Long Box” refers to the lengthy, white cardboard boxes most comics find themselves stored within – bagged, alphabetized and numerically ordered.

Today’s guest Tales From The Long Box columnist is JP Fallavollita.

“Gone, gone the form of man, rise the demon Etrigan!”

Fresh from a memorable guest appearance within the pages of Alan Moore’s critically acclaimed Swamp Thing series – an appearance that served to rejuvenate the character – the demon known as Etrigan received his own four-issue mini series in late 1986. Written and illustrated by Matt Wagner, at that time best known for his independent comic book work, this Demon series followed directly from the Moore interpretation: a gothic-inspired, vicious, manipulative…and rhyming demon!

Saturday At The Movies: Night Breed: The Cabal Cut And Occupy Midian

Back in 1990, I was on a family vacation with my Dad’s side. We were in Houston, visiting friends, but all I could think about was getting into a R-rated movie called Night Breed. You see, in 1990 I was thirteen years old, which meant films with the dreaded R were off-limits in Canada until I turned eighteen. That was the law. But I was a Clive Barker fan, I had read his short novel Cabal and I was desperate to see the film. So, I managed to convince my Dad, who had picked up a nasty bug on the trip, to take me to some movie theatre and sit with me through Night Breed. That’s what Dad’s are for, right?

Of course, he hated it. “It wasn’t even scary,” he said when we walked out of the theatre.

Craig Sheffer tries to get David Cronenberg to explain Naked Lunch to him.

That was my first experience watching Night Breed. And even though Dad didn’t dig it, I did. I loved the story of Boone (Craig Sheffer), accused of being a serial killer and who is accepted by a group of monsters who live in Midian, outside Calgary. I loved David Cronenberg in his first acting endeavour, playing psycho psychiatrist Dr. Decker. I loved the cornucopia of creatures Clive Barker featured as he directed the film he first wrote. What I didn’t know at the time was that Night Breed wasn’t what Barker’s original vision was. No, his was something much grander, but, because of studio meddling, it wasn’t meant to be.

Until now.

Mat Langford’s Gaming World – A look Back At Chrono Trigger

One of the last great titles on the SNES was one that RPG fans had been waiting for with white knuckles. It was a game that was helmed by RPG greatness – both the creators of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest - and in an era where the SNES was on its way out, to be replaced by the 3D Playstation, the game stood to keep people in 2D land just a little longer. The game, of course, was called Chrono Trigger. Find out why it rocked after the jump.
