Rock Of Ages and That’s My Boy Have Disastrous Openings – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend of June 15th

It was an absolutely abysmal weekend for two new releases looking to connect with audiences. Just how bad was it? Find out after the jump!

Once again, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted topped the box office, bringing in a solid $35.5 million to raise it’s two week total to an impressive $125 million. This is obviously the family film of choice for audiences of the moment, but with Pixar’s Brave due out June 21st, I think the film’s reign is about to come to an end.

In second place for the second week in a row with $20 million was Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the film dropped a massive 60% and has yet to cross the $100 million mark. The film’s R-rating and cerebral themes have taken a toll on it’s grosses, at least in North America. While the film will no doubt make it to that magic number, it’s certainly not going to turn out to be a box office blockbuster.

Debuting in third place with a lacklustre $15 million was Rock of Ages. Clearly, 80′s hair metal lovers either don’t go to the movies or didn’t buy Tom Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx. Whatever the case, this was definitely not the reaction anyone involved was looking for. The film is going to have a hard time making back its $75 million budget, at least in North America.

While Rock of Ages’ debut was dissapointing, there’s no question that Adam Sandler’s latest was even more disastrous. I don’t think anyone saw That’s My Boy debuting in fifth place with just $13 million. I know I didn’t – I thought it would come in second with close to $30 million. Is it poor reviews or just poor choices that are sinking Adam Sandler? Whichever it is, Sandler is going to absolutely rethink his next few films to get himself back the good graces of audiences.

As for the rest of the top five, Snow White and The Huntsman came in fourth place $13.8 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – $32 million
2) That’s My Boy – $29 million
3) Rock of Ages - $27 million
4) Prometheus –   $25 million
5) Snow White and the Huntsman – $16 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – $35.5 million
2)Prometheus – $20 million
3) Rock of Ages - $15 million
4) Snow White and the Huntsman –   $13.8 million
5) That’s My Boy – $13 million

Next weekend sees the release of Pixar’s anticipated Brave, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Killer and Steve Carrell’s Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World. Check back in on Friday to see where we think these flicks will land!
