Prometheus Pre-Game – Glenn Walker Revisits Alien 3

The Alien pseudo-sideways-prequel Prometheus hits theaters in a few days, and as part of our build-up for the release here at Biff Bam Pop!, our editor-in-chief asked me to review Alien 3. At first I thought he was mad at me, punishing me. As you may have guessed, there is no love lost between me at the second Alien sequel. That said, having not seen it since I watched it in a movie theater back in May of 1992, I recently gave it a fresh viewing. These are my thoughts.

Mat Langford’s Gaming World – Microsoft E3 Rundown

Today, at E3, Microsoft took the stage at about 12:30pm EST (9:30am PST).

They opened with a gameplay demo of HALO 4. It looks great, the gameplay looks similar to that of Halo 3 and ODST. There seems to be a new type of enemy shown as well, an orb-type foe that seems to be able to fly at the speed of light, interesting stuff. There was also some kind of fiery skull monster, looking scary and great. About 5-7 minutes of demo there, and it was pretty impressive.

Then, we got nearly 10 minutes of gameplay from Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The game looks FANTASTIC! The kill system of tagging enemies is back, and implemented in a great way here. Watching the demo-er take Sam through a desert-style level and silently killing people, while using the targeting mode to kill multiple enemies at a time made the whole experience seem very well executed. This game should be a whole lot of fun.

Happy to break it to you – MIB3 is all sorts of fun.

Tales from the Longbox – The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 (1982)

Every other week, Jason Shayer will highlight an issue or a run of issues pulled from the horde of comic book long boxes that occupy more room in his house than his wife can tolerate. Each of these reviews will delve into what made that issue or run significant as well as discuss the creative personalities behind the work. “Long Box” refers to the lengthy, white cardboard boxes most comics find themselves stored within – bagged, alphabetized and numerically ordered.

Writer: Roger Stern
Penciler: John Romita Jr.

This annual turned out to be more of a team-up story with co-star Captain Marvel stealing most of the spotlight. Captain Marvel’s 17-page origin was a textbook example of how to concisely craft and introduce a new superhero. Stern leveraged her point-of-view as a rookie superhero with access to almost unlimited powers, but was still trying to understand and control them.

In an interview for Back Issue magazine #54, Roger Stern admited: “With Captain Marvel, I did my best to create a character in the Lee/Kirby/Ditko tradition, a down-to-Earth person who suddenly acquired extraordinary power. And I wanted her to be a straightforward, likable superhero.”
